Is Earwax Removal Necessary?

Dead skin and lubricating oil naturally form the wax in your ears which eventually works its way out. Earwax is therefore quite normal. It can sometimes become impacted, especially if you regularly use ear buds. If earwax is causing pain, reduced hearing or causing your hearing aids to whistle PinnaClear can help by professionally and medically removing the ear wax. Common methods of earwax removal include using ear drops, by irrigation or ear syringing with water, or microsuction. Microsuction is regarded as the ‘gold standard’ for ear wax removal.

Why Microsuction Earwax Removal?

  • Microsuction ear wax removal involves using a suction device to withdraw any wax and is considered the safest method when compared to alternatives
  • Unlike ear syringing, microsuction ear wax removal is performed under direct observation, using medical loupes (magnifiers) to help us see inside your ears.
  • As water isn’t used there are fewer risks of infection and it is, therefore, the safer alternative to ear syringing.

AtPinnaClear we are fully trained and certified to perform microsuction. Prices for professional ear wax removal start at £50. Read more about earwax removal here.

Olive oil ear drops

Olive oil ear drops can help to soften and draw out small amounts of earwax and for some people, this is enough, but if it is too hard and impacted, the olive oil will only soften the wax but won’t remove the wax entirely.

Cotton Buds

There is still a misconception that using cotton buds will help to remove ear wax, unfortunately, this isn’t the case, particularly with hard and impacted wax. If you do use cotton buds you risk making things worse by pushing the wax further down the ear canal and ultimately, perforating your eardrum.

Hopi Ear Candling

Hopi ear candling is a common yet unregulated practice used for ear wax relief. Studies have shown that such procedures are ineffective at successfully removing ear wax. You are also at risk of burning your ear and infection due to the residue left in your ears following the procedure.
